Mr Stephan Nanan

Mr. Stephan Nanan is a Senior Instructor and Programme Leader of Maritime Studies at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), with over 21 years of combined teaching and research experience at UTT and The University of the West Indies (UWI). He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with minors in Environmental Physics and Materials Science, and a Master of Science in Environmental Science and Management. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Process Engineering with a focus on Maritime Decarbonisation.

His primary research focus is on the assessment and reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all modes of transportation, with additional interests in renewable energy systems. Mr. Nanan serves as the Deputy Director and GHG Advisor for the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC) Caribbean. He is certified by the UNFCCC Secretariat and the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI), demonstrating his expertise in the application of the IPCC Guidelines and strengthening his capacity to address emerging requirements associated with the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

Mr. Nanan has applied his expertise extensively within the Caribbean maritime sector. He served as the lead researcher in the completion of four maritime port GHG inventories in Trinidad and Tobago, three of which were conducted for ports owned and operated by National Energy. He was also the primary researcher responsible for the development of a position paper examining the use of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating as a measure of ship energy efficiency for vessels operating within the Caribbean region. Additionally, he currently represents Trinidad and Tobago, and by extension Caribbean member states, at the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) Working Group on Air Pollution and Energy Efficiency.
